The Logan-Hocking School District (LHSD) has joined a nationwide initiative to become a Heart Safe School through Project ADAM (Automated Defibrillators in Adam’s Memory), a nationwide program that helps schools prepare to respond to sudden cardiac arrest. In central Ohio, Project ADAM is led locally by Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
With the district’s elementary schools now completing the program, all Logan-Hocking School District buildings have achieved Heart Safe School designation. The district’s middle school and high school were previously designated, and the addition of the elementary buildings ensures the entire district is prepared to respond to cardiac emergencies.
The designation reflects the district’s commitment to students, staff and community safety. In the U.S., an estimated 356,000 adults and 23,000 children experience out-of-hospital cardiac arrests each year. Although survival rates are low, prompt intervention, including CPR and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), significantly increases the likelihood of survival.
“Safety extends beyond the classroom,” said Christy Bosch, superintendent of Logan-Hocking School District. “Becoming a Heart Safe School is about protecting not only our students and staff, but also families and our community. We want our schools to be places where people know they are supported and prepared in an emergency.”
As part of the program, district staff participate in emergency drills to rehearse response procedures during the school day. After school hours, the district’s public access defibrillation program allows community members to use on-site AEDs if needed. Good Samaritan laws protect individuals who act in good faith during a life-saving attempt.
AEDs are located at:
Central Elementary
Chieftain Elementary
Chieftain Center
Green Elementary
Hocking Hills Elementary
Logan High School
Logan-Hocking District Office
Logan-Hocking Middle School
Union Furnace Elementary
The devices provide step-by-step verbal instructions and will only deliver a shock if a shockable heart rhythm is detected. In the event of a suspected cardiac arrest, individuals should call 911, begin CPR and retrieve an AED.
The district encourages community members to consider CPR and AED training as an investment in their own health and the safety of others.
